Coach Sherman
innovative Welding Instructor
Coach Sherman sets the bar for excellence in welding instruction. He discovered Welding in high school and the rest is history. He has been a welding instructor for over 25 years in Clay County, Florida, primarily at Orange Park high school. Over the years, he introduced, and trained hundreds of students to become professional welders. Passionate about welding, he views it as a way to empower youth to become independent minded and positive contributors to society. His dedication to student success has earned him numerous awards and accolades.
For a long time, he dreamed of teaching independently. Many years ago, he formed Works Academy with the vision of training as many students as possible to become Welding professionals. After retiring from public education, he revisited his dream and reestablished Works Academy to teach on his own terms.
At Works Academy, students learn everything they need to start working in the field and pass industry certifications. His extensive teaching experience has helped him build relationships with community stakeholders, which will help prepare his students for valuable Welding careers. Students learn from seasoned welders, who bring unique perspectives from the field. He has achieved a 98% pass rate on Industry certifications..
Welding Showcase
Students showed their skills in oxyfuel cutting, plasma cutting, shielded metal arc welding, flux core arc welding, and gas metal arc welding. Business partners from the community came to see the students’ skills and talk with them about career opportunities. Thank you Sherman Smith for hosting a great event.
Howard E. Adkins Award
Sherman Smith our welding instructor received the Howard E. Adkins Award from the American Welding Society at their annual meeting. Congratulations Mr. Smith for your devotion to our students. We thank you for your efforts to expand welding skills and knowledge.
